- Shiva Announces New Ethernet Pricing Strategy:
- Award Winning EtherPort to List for $299
-
- CAMBRIDGE, MA (1 September 1991)--In a move to solidify its leadership position
- in the rapidly growing Macintosh Ethernet market, Shiva Corporation today
- announced a new pricing strategy for its line of Macintosh Ethernet add-in
- cards. Effective immediately, pricing on Shiva's EtherPort cards is reduced by
- over 40% to $299. Shiva Corporation is the only vendor to apply a major price
- cut to its entire line of Ethernet add-in cards. The new EtherPort pricing will
- apply to models II, IIT, SE, SE/T, SE,30 and SE/30T.
-
- The cards, which connect Macintoshes to popular Ethernet network cabling,
- received the World Class Award for excellence from Macworld magazine in August,
- 1991. Using an EtherPort, Mac users can access network resources faster because
- they are connected directly to Ethernet cabling. On an Ethernet network, data
- is transferred over 40 times faster than on a LocalTalk network. In addition,
- Ethernet networks may link a variety of computers such as DEC VAXes, UNIX
- workstations, PCs, Novell NetWare servers and other Macs.
-
- The price cut is the cornerstone of an aggressive strategy to solidify Shiva's
- position as the de-facto standard in Macintosh Ethernet connectivity.
- EtherPort, first introduced in 1987, was the first Ethernet add-in card for
- Macintosh computers.
-
- Dan Schwinn, Shiva president and founder, said, "The speed and connectivity
- benefits of linking Macs to Ethernet are widely recognized; users are now
- looking for reliable brand names at low prices. EtherPort is an established
- name in a rapidly growing market. Our strategy is straightforward: to offer the
- de-facto standard--EtherPort--at the lowest price."
-
- According to International Data Corporation (IDC), worldwide shipments of
- Macintosh Ethernet connections will grow from 114,200 units in 1990 to 1.25
- million connection in 1995. Ethernet cards for the Macintosh, such as Shiva's
- EtherPorts, will comprise 82% of this exploding market.
-
- Shiva's EtherPort II and EtherPort IIT are the first Ethernet cards for the
- Macintosh to pass Digital Equipment Corporation's Interoperability
- Qualification Testing for PATHWORKS for Macintosh. Users can be assured
- complete compatibility when using the PATHWORKS application with Shiva's
- EtherPorts. Shiva's EtherPorts are fully compatible with AppleTalk Phase 1 and
- 2, TCP/IP and DECnet and are available with interfaces for thick, thin, and
- twisted pair Ethernet (10BaseT).
-
- Availability
- Shiva sells through authorized dealers and distributors worldwide.
- Domestically, Shiva's major distributors include Tech Data, Ingram Micro,
- Merisel/Macamerica and GBC.
